SIMPLE WAYS TO IMPROVE HEALTH
No one wants to be sick since
sickness is basically an expense and a horrible inconvenience. besides feeling
unwell, one may not be able to doo all the things that are part of one's day to
day activities. Worse yet, one may need assistance and treatment that can be a
drain on the pocket and also a difficult thing to stick to. As the old adage
goes, "Prevention is better than cure" and it most certainly is the
case even in today's modern world. While it's true that some illnesses can't be
avoided but there is much one can do to slow down or prevent the onset of
various diseases.
Here are five basic things you can do
to take care of your HealthHand
1. Hygiene- Diseases like cold or influenza are easily transmitted by
rubbing your nose or eyes when your hands have been contaminated by germs. True
to the words that appeared in the Mayo Clinic, "one of the best ways to
avoid getting sick and spreading illness" is to wash your hands. Serious
diseases like pneumonia and other diarrheal diseases which result in the death
of over two million children under the age of five every year can also be
prevented through practising good hand hygiene. The spread of deadly Ebola can
also be minimized by the simple habit of hand washing. Hand washing is
especially essential after using the toilet, after changing diapers or helping
a child use the toilet, before and after treating a wound or cut, before
preparing, serving or eating food, before and after being with someone who is
sick, after touching an animal or animal waste, after sneezing, coughing or
blowing your nose and after handling garbage. It is not enough to just wash
hands. Hand washing should be done correctly.
2. Safe Water- Diseases like cholera, deadly diarrhoea, typhoid, hepatitis
and many other infections are spread through unsafe or contaminated water. Each year about 1.7 billion cases of diarrheal
diseases are due to unsafe drinking water.
3. Eat smart- Good health and good nutrition go hand in hand. A healthy,
well balanced diet is essential if one wants to enjoy good health. From time to
time, evaluate your intake of salt, sugar, fats along with the size of your
portion. While buying packaged foods, always check the ingredients and select
whole-grain foods when buying rice, pasta or cereals. These are better
alternatives than refined grain. Also select healthy sources of protein
choosing small and lean portions of meat and fish couple of times a week. One
of the major cause of being overweight is high intake of sugars and solid fats.
An easy way to combat this is to drink water in place of sweet beverages.
Substitute fruit for sugary desserts. To keep your blood pressure in check, use
herbs and spices to flavour your meals instead of salt. It will also be helpful
to remember this saying, "Eat to live and don't live to eat". So
while enjoying your food, do not gorge on it once you are no longer hungry.
Food poisoning is also a major health concern in every country as each year one
in every six people in the Unites States fall sick from food poisoning. While
most recover without permanent ill effects, there are still others who die out
of food poisoning. So take care while preparing and storing food.
4. Be physically active- Whatever age you may be, regular
physical activity is important in order to be in good shape. Exercise helps in
sleeping well, staying mobile, keeps bones and muscles strong, helps in
maintaining ideal weight, lowers risk of premature death and also reduces the
risk of depression. On the other hand, lack of exercise can lead to heart
disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood
pressure, high levels of cholesterol and increased risk of suffering from a
stroke. A word of caution before choosing a new exercise program is to consult
your doctor to get the right kind of exercise depending on your health and age.
Exercise need not be dull and boring, choose an activity that you like, for
example, cycling, swimming, canoeing, walking, jogging or gardening.
5. Sleep well- Adults need about seven to eight hours of sleep each night.
This need should never be neglected or traded for anything else. Sleep is
essential for normal growth and development, proper learning and retention of
new information, to prevent diseases, maintain proper levels of hormones and
also for better cardiovascular health. Lack of sleep can lead to depression,
obesity, heart diseases, diabetes and also dangerous accidents. There are sound
reasons for getting sound sleep!
